Extruded vs Cold Drawn Aluminum Seamless Tube: What Is the Difference?

Extruded vs. Cold Drawn Aluminum Seamless Tube: What Is the Difference?

When sourcing aluminum seamless tube, one of the first questions is whether you need extruded tube or cold drawn (precision drawn) tube. Both are seamless — meaning there is no weld seam — but the manufacturing process and resulting properties are quite different.

How Extruded Tube Is Made

In the extrusion process, a heated aluminum billet is forced through a shaped die under high pressure, producing a tube profile. After extrusion, the tube may be straightened, cut to length, and then subjected to heat treatment to achieve the required temper.

How Cold Drawn Tube Is Made

Cold drawing starts with an extruded tube, which is then drawn through a die at room temperature to reduce the outer diameter and wall thickness. This cold working process improves dimensional accuracy and surface finish significantly compared to the as-extruded condition.

Dimensional Tolerances

Cold drawn tube offers significantly tighter dimensional tolerances than extruded tube. For applications where tight OD, ID, or wall thickness tolerances are critical — such as aerospace structural tubes or camera lens barrels — cold drawn tube is usually the better choice.

Surface Finish

Cold drawn tube has a smoother, brighter internal and external surface compared to extruded tube.

Lead Time & Cost

Extruded tube has a shorter production cycle and is generally less expensive than cold drawn tube.

Which Should You Specify?

Specify extruded tube when: tolerances are not critical, cost is a primary consideration, or a custom profile shape is needed.

Specify cold drawn (precision drawn) tube when: tight dimensional tolerances are required, surface quality is important, or the application is in aerospace, precision machining, or hydraulic systems.
